Not all product/sales configurators are alike.
When we started working with manufacturers over 25 years ago, one of the first tools we created was a product configurator. Different types of configurators exist such as rules-based and constraint based configurators. Both types are formula based complex configurators that do a great job of configuring engineered products or products that require specific measurements in one area when dimensions of another change. A door company for example that has an almost limitless combination of height/width and thickness doors would work well with a complex rules or constraint based configurator where engineered to order requirements exist.
Our configurator was specifically designed to not use any formulas.
Our configurator works with bill of material options. This creates a simple option based configurator that is easy to setup and easy to maintain without requiring complex formulas. A rules based configurator would work but it adds complexity where it isn’t needed. You don’t have to analyze complex formulas to determine how your final bill of materials was changed. You can simply look at the option bill of material that shows the changes required in a familiar bill of material format.
